We met “Mr. & Mrs. Genie”, aka Joshua Dawson and Ingrid Thornhill, at Besh’s birthday party in December 2011 and from that minute on we were friends for life. This was the first time we had heard about their I AM Genie Foundation which was in its infancy, and Wayne Dyer was the farthest thing from our minds. After a few hang-outs with Josh and Ingrid we were well-aware of the cool things they were doing to enhance the lives of cancer survivors who contribute to their community and we jumped on board.
In 2013, they decided to start bringing motivational speakers to our hometown, St. John’s, Newfoundland, which was a new thing for the oldest city in North America, and they were going to start it off with a bang by bringing in the “Father of motivation”, Wayne Dyer. Besh jumped at the opportunity and offered his public speaking skills as the opening speaker and I offered my art skills, not knowing yet exactly what I would do.
Josh, being the creative intuitive soul he is, came up with the idea for me to do a painting of Wayne in a St. John’s landscape and present it to him on stage at the event as a thank you and a momento of his visit to the island. And as artistic projects sometimes roll, we didn’t have a lot of time to work with so I had to buckle down and make it happen fast…and make it awesome. No pressure!
As a note, my painting specialty is not portraits and this one was going to challenge me even more so as it was going to be very public. There was no room for error, in my mind, which ultimately helped me “get in and get out without messing my hair up”.
So I set up my drawing table and timelapse camera and gave myself a time limit to complete it. With a glass of wine by my side and Newfoundland’s own Hey Rosetta as my musical inspiration, I just relaxed and got into the zone. 6 hours later, from blank paper to finish, I sat back and was thrilled with the results (pressure is a great motivator, let me tell ya)!
Besh and I produced the promotional video for I AM Genie and on 25 June, 2013, on stage at the Holy Heart Theatre in front of 1000 guests, Besh nailed his opening speech and I presented Wayne with his painting of “Dyer Straits”. What a night!

This is a prime example of creative collaboration. As Wayne Dyer says, “The greatest gift you have been given is the gift of your imagination.” We all totally rocked this event and since then, we have been involved with all the speakers they have brought here including Deepak Chopra, Marianne Williamson, Jack Canfield, Gabrielle Bernstein, James Van Praagh…and Wayne must have liked it so much, he’s coming back to St. John’s again – with something new to say!
